What kind of camera did you use for this? I like how close you were able to capture this image. For my photography, I’ve got a digital camera, a Canon PowerShow A1000 IS, with a 4.x optical zoom but I can’t zoom in across a distance. For a shot like this, I’d pretty much need to be inches away from the flower pot. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for posting this photo!

Hey, Lauren. I use a Pentax K-30. It’s a new DSLR camera from Pentax that is water, dust, and temperature resistant. It’s great for taking pictures outdoors since a little rain or humidity won’t bother it. It came with a regular to wide angle lens that is great for landscape and horizon shots like sunrises, sunsets, and just amazing sky shots in general. I bought an additional telephoto lens as well. It’s what I used for this shot and any other shots where I need a close up or really zoomed in view. I had the aperture wide open to create the really shallow depth of field, where the sprout is in focus but everything in front or behind it is blurry. I was standing a couple feet away with my camera zoomed all the way in to a focal length of 300 mm. I know you weren’t really asking for this much detail, but I figured I’d throw it in just in case anyone else was wondering. If you (or anyone else) have any more questions about photography, Digital Photography School is a great site for learning about it.

Becca, I’m just an amateur photographer but I appreciate the level of detail you gave in your response. The explanation of the “aperture” for example and seeing the cause/effect this does has helped me understand photography a little bit better. I took a photography class back in HS and it never ceases to amaze me all the cool things you can do with the right camera equipment. Thanks so much for posting this and I bet others will appreciate it too!
